Day 5 - Golden Honeybush Tea

Updated: Dec 8, 2018

Day 5 of our 12 Days of Christmas Tea Tasting brings us to a fairly new tea for me - the honeybush tea. It's caffeine free, which makes it a perfect cup of tea anytime of the day. Honeybush tea is similar to the rooibos tea, but sweeter and lighter in color. This great-tasting organic tea is delicious plain, but this particular golden tea has a gentle blend of turmeric, cinnamon chips, lemongrass, black peppercorns, and maple extract. I felt it was perfect to add to Day 5 of our Tea Tasting because of its golden color (5 golden rings).

Let's take a look at some of the heath benefits of honeybush tea:

1. It has high levels of antioxidants (always a good thing!).

2. It defends the body from dangerous free radicals in the cells, which cause cancer.

3. Helps fight off germs and sickness.

4. Helps with stomach issues.

5. Helps heal sore throats.

6. Relaxes your body to help you sleep better.

7. Improves Diabetes symptoms.

8. Promotes weight loss.

9. Improves heart health.

10.Helps with asthma.

That's a lot of good stuff! The second ingredient in this tea blend is turmeric. There has been a lot of talk in recent years of why we should get more of this superfood in our diets. Here are few things to think about turmeric while sipping your tea...

1. It's anti-inflammatory.

2. Promotes overall joint health and mobility.

3. Promotes heart health.

4. Supports healthy cholesterol levels.

5. Helps support brain health and memory.

6. Thought of as a pain reliever.

7. Helps with digestion.

And more...

I could go on all day, but I think you get the idea. This tea is healthy! So drink up knowing you are doing your body good.

In the 12 Days of Christmas song, Day Five is for 5 Golden Rings. This symbolizes the first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch." But gold in the Christmas story always makes me think of the magi bringing Jesus their gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. I really like what the Biblical Archeology website had to say about these valuable gifts.

"In addition to the honor and status implied by the value of the gifts of the magi, scholars think that these three (gifts) were chosen for their special spiritual symbolism about Jesus himself—gold representing his kingship, frankincense a symbol of his priestly role, and myrrh a prefiguring of his death and embalming...

Still others have suggested that the gifts of the magi were a bit more practical—even medicinal in nature...Did the magi “from the East” know of frankincense’s healing properties when they presented it to young Jesus?"

I love that.

I hope you found this information about the honeybush tea and the gifts of the magi interesting. While we enjoy our Christmas tea today, let's stop and reflect on Jesus, our King, and the true meaning of Christmas.

Have a great day!

Note: If you are on diabetic medication or pregnant, you may want to check with your doctor before drinking a lot of this tea since it balances blood sugar.

The magi.
